Hard drive hunting..

Recently my hard drive has been telling me that he's a little full, In an effort to trim his excess waist, I have been scrummaging around finding all sorts of old work. During my two years studying interactive media at college I first discovered how to create vector illustrations, and then I just kept making them.

The illustration below is part of an animation project, which is the reason she has no mouth.. hopefully Ill find some more interesting pieces!

Sustainable Me: Group Print

The first term of second year.. ugh, We were set the theme of sustainability in which he had to produce four outcomes, two screen based and two print based pieces each media consisting of one individual and one group.

This is my group print outcome, We emailed designers asking them their position on sustainability, the message we delivered is intended to be relevant to their response. The design agency we contacted disregarded the practice of sustainability stating that they believed the duty wasn't down to them, but down to the government and other authoritative organisations.

Our idea was that we would develop material that would be delivered to design agencies as a military operation to give that initial impact. The material would be designed reflecting each agencies profile, the agency we contacted designed for a lot of out pursuit centres and companies of that nature, hence the army/survival guide theme.

In the land of..

I loved this project!

This was a brief set at the end of my first year at university, it was to develop a poem into a narrative, with the outcome being either a film or a book. The poem was a basis for the narrative and the out didn't have to include all the original copy. The outcome must reflect themes and ideas within the poem.

The poem I was given was 'The Land of the Bumbley Boo' by Spike Milligan, as you may know Spike Milligan is famous for his shows such as 'The Goon Show' and 'Q9' also said to of inspired the Monty Python.

The themes of the poem are escapism with a comical appeal, it's not only aimed at children but adults as well.

One Hundred Years of Solitude

The brief was to redesign the book cover for Gabriel Garcia Marquez's 'One Hundred Years of Solitude'. It was set by penguin as part of the student awards competition, I had a bloody bad time with this one..

James and the Giant Peach

I have finally managed to photograph my work.. I decided against just uploading the PDF outcome.

Anyway.. down to business, this is my final outcome for Puffin student awards. The brief was to redesign Roald Dahls classic 'James and the Giant Peach' for its fiftieth anniversary..

Testing.. One, Two

Well.. lets just say its been awhile, and i'm deeply sorry, I kept meaning to update it with new work, inspirational pieces and daily thoughts.. but university got the better of me, but as it is now second year and i'm obviously a much more mature student, I shall commit to updating this blog frequently.

Magazine Layout - Jan Tschichold

The second piece is complete!! I had to get my Tschichold time on and design a magazine layout using modernist principles (hierarchy, path for the eye and strong use of negative space), Tschichold is one of the fathers of modernism, writing the first typography 'how to book'. If the truth is told I spent a lot more time developing the Brody layout, I felt it was best to have one really good piece than two mediocre pieces. The design is based on one of his posters for an exhibition, I liked the simplicity and elegance, inspiring me to appropriate the style. All in all, I particularly enjoyed this project and feel that magazine design is possibly the area of graphic design I would wish to go into.

The next project begins early Monday morning (Ughhhh!) despite this fact i am looking forward to the brief (developing TV idents), I have a few ideas buzzing around my head already.

Magazine Layout - Neville Brody

Happy new year! (a little belated). Back for another term of wonderful design and innovation at BAGC1, UWIC.. Only three weeks in and already on to our second assignment, one in which we learn about designing running publications such as a magazine; grids, columns, type hierarchy and type harmony are all included in this assignments teachings,

The brief: To produce two magazine layouts, one post-modernist and one modernist. Chose one a designer from each discipline, write an article about them and their work then appropriate their style to your design.

To start with I was struggling with come up with an aesthetically pleasing design because I had to work in the style of someone else, After looking through 'The Graphic Language of Neville Brody' I found some inspiration and end up with the piece of work above. I am currently still working on the Modernist layout, when its complete I will upload.

Letter form

One of our first assignments of the term was to design our own letter form, At first I didn't like theoriginal outcome, but the final week of term was giving to us to revise our final pieces. Im now content with the piece..

Guess who's back?

Its been quite a while since my last post, but as the festive season drew in, with its parties and excitement, alcohol and presents.. I was busy completing assignments and writing essays, The life and times indeed. Now with the first term over and done with I now have the time to update this glorious blog.

As of this weekend I am back home, and will be for roughly a month, I intend on seeing family and friends as well as relaxing.. alot, Well deserved I think, Its been an extremely busy term.. And overall I came out with a pretty decent grade.. B-

Over the next few days I will begin to upload work, inspirations and other things of a similar nature

Extraordinary Pigeons.. Yeah

in doing research for a visual metaphor exercise in the library my team mate made a superb find, a book entitled Extraordinary Pigeons. I was quickly distracted from the work as I began flicking through this crazy book, It was quite hard to keep the laughter down.. I didn't mind the tears though. Absolutely Epic.

I love it when you call me big figure..

This project is has easily been my favorite one yet. The brief was to create either a good or bad character using a visual metaphors on an usual scale of 3(w) x 9(h) A4 sheets. Has to be said that working at this scale was a pain in the.. neck, Photoshop took ages rendering any minor changes as well as saving.

We brainstormed out ideas for awhile before deciding to tackle the brief of using a bad person. You were allowed to eleborate and develop the idea of the person being bad in any way you felt nessercery. Me and my team thought a corporate boss was a nice starting point, we quickly developed the idea by stating that he made all his earnings from exploiting third world countries via sweatshops.

After 17 hours of slaving away on our design we finally finished and made our deadline. We got a really good response from our classmates and our especially our lecturers. Another job well done i'm thinking. Looking forward to the next brief!

Ohhh quick question..
..why the hell does a PSD have a size limit of 2GB? It makes absolutely no sense.. And I like how they know your file is over the limit when you tell it to save, but it attempts it for about 15 minutes then decides to tell you your file is to big and that you have to save it as a PSB? Nice one adobe!

Form, Function and Material..

Friday was the deadline for our project, an A3 poster which had to illustrate the form, function and material of an object. The object we were given was a tin can, not the most interesting of things agreed, but we thought that this was a positive because it would drive us to think harder and be more creative.

Me and my team mate (Matthew Weeks) are pretty happy with the outcome. It got a good response from our class mates as well as our lecturers. Job well done! Whats next?

Never judge a book by its cover..

Roughly a year and a half ago I realized that I didn't own many books on graphic design, In an attempt to increase my collection I logged on to amazon and bought a few books that looked interesting. A week or so later they arrived "Graphic design that works", " Graphic design cookbook" and "Graphic design as communication". The first two books were a good read, with alot of strong ideas and nice work, The third book (pictured above) was just page after page of text, not some that visually enticed me, needless to say I was never interested in it... Not until about a week ago when I was sorting through my books, making room for my new arrivals (still attempting to increase my collection) I picked it up and flicked through, hoping it had transformed into something of interest, suddenly my eye was caught by something familiar, A print of F.T marinetti's Zang Tumb Tumb (1914) futurista poster. I became alot more interested in the book as the week before we had been shown this poster in one of my lectures, I began to realise the relevance of this book to my course, Flicking back to the contents page I read "(chapter) 6 Modernism, (chapter) 7 Postmodernism," which are huge aspects of my course.
So basicly.. I purchased this book based on the cover, Id say a job well done to the designer, But then I was disappointed with the content. Now a year later its going to be tremendously benificial. Never judge a book by its cover.. ?

Fabien Barral

Paul Arden

A few weeks ago I bought 'It's not how good you are, It's how good you want to be.' by Paul Arden, Just reading the book builds you up, gives you an extra sense of drive and power. Straight away I began looking for more of his books and came across 'God explained in a taxi ride' and 'Whatever you think, Think the opposite.' After eagerly awaiting their delivery, I now officially own them. I cant wait til I get the chance to sit down and read them properly.

One of the best books I have purchased

The art of looking sideways - Alan Fletcher

I recommend anyone who's into graphic design to buy this book. I did so at the recommendation of Ben Terret. Its a book about everything.. Colour, Creativity, Aesthetics, Paradox Etc. I can spend absolutely hours reading this book
